Barcelona Spine Center: minimally invasive spine surgery in Spain

Barcelona Sline Center logo

If you have back pain, you are not alone. It is one of the most common medical problems and nearly every one of us has experienced it. There are a variety of conservative treatments available, but sometimes these may not be effective enough and an operation may be the only option to eliminate back pain.

At Barcelona Spine Center over 15 years of experience in spinal surgery combined with innovative knowledge and extensive preparation enable the specialists to come up with the precise diagnosis and offer the most appropriate and the least invasive treatment for each particular spinal problem.

Their neurosurgeons offer minimally invasive solutions (MIS) for back pain, providing safe and effective treatment for a wide range of painful and debilitating conditions of the spine with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue. This approach eliminates the need to cut muscles, which in traditionally performed operations is the main reason of post operative pain, infections and complications. MIS also results in a faster recovery and return to normal life.

The specialists at the Barcelona Spine Center keep up with the latest developments in the fields of Spine Surgery and Neurosurgery, and use state of the art facilities to deliver the best possible treatment.

The team at the Center can arrange a complete range of medical services including all the necessary tests, MRI and CT scans, specialist’s consultation and, if needed, an operation within a very short time.

Below is the list of most frequently treated conditions at Barcelona Spine Center

Lumbar disc herniation

Herniation of a disc occurs when the soft centre of the disc bulges into the spinal canal and compresses a nerve root against the lamina or pedicle of a vertebra, thus causing sciatica. If conservative treatment of the herniated disc has failed, surgical treatment may be the only way to eliminate sciatica.

At Barcelona Spine Center removal of the prolapsed part of the intervertebral disk is performed using a microscopic approach. This microdiscectomy is performed through a small incision in the skin. Consequently, back muscles are not cut or traumatised, but progressively dilated. With this approach the nerve and prolapsed disc become visible allowing safe removal of the hernia. In most cases patient will feel much better immediately after the operation. In some cases microdiscectomy can be done endoscopically, through a slightly smaller incision in the skin.

Degenerative disc disease

Disc degeneration is a normal part of aging and for most people is not a problem, but in some cases a degenerated disc can cause severe constant chronic pain. Spinal fusion is an effective treatment of this condition and can be performed in Barcelona Spine Center with minimally invasive techniques.

As an alternative to a permanent fusion of two vertebrae, the neurosurgeons can perform dynamic stabilisation. The major feature of dynamic stabilisation is to allow controlled motion in such a way as to achieve more normal movement of the spine while preserving its normal anatomic structures. Dynamic stabilisation is performed using MIS and in some cases on an outpatient basis.

Specialists of Barcelona Spine Center are experts in treatment of Degenerative Disc Disease and can determine the best treatment, degree of necessary correction, extent and type of stabilisation for each patient.

Spinal stenosis

This is a medical condition in which the spinal canal narrows. It can lead to a compression of the spinal cord and nerves and may involve one or several vertebral levels. Symptoms may include lumbosciatica and/or 'neurogenic claudication', in which the patient feels numbness, pain or weakness of the legs whilst walking. In Barcelona Spine Center this pathology may also be solved by surgically increasing the space available for the spinal cord and the nerves with minimally invasive techniques. In some cases an implantable device can be introduced to relieve the symptoms without the need for bone removal.

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is an anterior displacement of a vertebra or the vertebral column in relation to the vertebrae below. Spinal stabilisation is the best surgical treatment for this disease. It fuses the unstable segment of the spine thus eliminating the back or leg pain often seen in this condition. MIS fusion techniques allow for a safe and effective treatment of this pathology, with excellent post-operative results.

Cervical disc herniation

In order to reduce the risk of complications, treatment of disc herniation in the cervical region of the spine is often combined with the vertebrae stabilisation. Specialists at Barcelona Spine Center use both Artificial Disc Implants and Spinal Fusion for this purpose.

Artificial Cervical Discs imitate the natural motion of the injured disc thus preserving the functionality of the neck. Based on their extensive experience neurosurgeons at Barcelona Spine Center can recommend the most suitable for each particular case implant. Spinal fusion is reserved for the cases where the disc herniation is associated with some other biomechanical abnormalities of the cervical spine. In Barcelona Spine Center both types of treatment are performed using the MIS approach.

Cervical spondylosis

This commonly occurs with aging and is characterised by ossification of the ligaments and often accompanied by a disc herniation. Decompressive surgery is often mandatory, especially if there is a nerve or spinal cord compression. The procedure takes 1-2 hours and in the majority of cases patients go home the same day.
