What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a quick and relatively painless minor operation to cut or block the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the penis.  The man is still able to produce semen as usual, however as there is now no sperm in the semen, a pregnancy cannot ensue.

In most cases, a vasectomy will take place under local anaesthetic, with only the scrotum and testicles being numbed.  The procedure takes about 15 minutes and is not painful, although there may be some bruising and pain afterwards that can be alleviated with paracetamol.  It is usually possible to go home the same day and return to work after one or two days, although strenuous activity should be avoided for the following week.

  • It is considered a simpler, safer and more reliable form of contraception than female alternatives
  • It does not effective spontaneity during sex
  • It is very rare that there are any long term detrimental effects on health

Who is a vasectomy suitable for?

For many couples, a vasectomy is a safe and effective method of contraception, however a vasectomy is considered a permanent form of sterilisation and should only be considered by men who are sure that they do not want any more children, preferably with the permission of their partner.  Doctors can be reluctant to perform a vasectomy on a man under the age of 30 and usually recommend that the decision to have a vasectomy is not undertaken during a time of crisis or big life changes.
