Where can I find private varicose vein treatment in the UK?

Spire Healthcare, one of the UK's leading private hospital groups, works with experienced vascular surgeons to provide expert treatment of varicose veins at 38 fully equipped hospitals throughout the country.

Do I need treatment for varicose veins?

Varicose veins develop when veins stretch, as a result of age, pregnancy, being overweight or genetic tendency, causing the valves in the vein to malfunction and blood to pool.  This results in swollen, enlarged veins that are usually dark blue or purple, and can be lumpy or twisted in appearance.  Treatment for varicose veins on the NHS is limited to cases where there is an obvious associated health problem, with most cases being regarded as cosmetic.  However, early treatment can prevent later complications such as blood clots and leg ulcers developing, as well as very effectively improving the appearance of the legs.

Fast access to varicose vein treatment

Spire Healthcare provides fast access to all the available treatments for varicose veins from a choice of consultant vascular surgeons.  Patients are cared for in comfortable and friendly hospitals that have the highest standards of cleanliness and infection control, with many procedures being performed as day case surgery.

Varicose vein treatment at Spire Healthcare

Spire Healthcare offers the full range of varicose vein treatments, including the latest non-surgical techniques.  Its vascular surgeons are highly experienced in advising on the best course of treatment for each individual:

Ligation and stripping

Ligation and stripping is a commonly used and very effective surgical treatment for large varicose veins.  The vein is tied and sealed through a small incision in the groin and then removed through a second small incision further down the leg.  Other veins in the leg take over the role of the removed vein, leaving blood flow unaffected.  Ligation and stripping is usually performed as day case surgery, however an overnight stay may be necessary in some cases, particularly if both legs are being treated.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment that involves injecting foam into a vein that has been mapped out using ultrasound.  The foam seals the damaged vein, allowing stronger veins to take over its role.  The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, often as a series of treatments.

Endovenous laser treatment (EVT)

Spire Healthcare is able to offer the latest laser treatment for varicose veins.  The entire damaged vein is sealed and closed from the inside using a tiny ultrasound guided laser that is inserted into the vein through a catheter under local anaesthetic.  This minimally invasive alternative to stripping has is proving very successful and is suitable for about seven out of ten patients with varicose veins.

Clarivein®

Clarivein® is an exciting new non-surgical treatment for varicose veins, including those that cause spider veins and those associated with restless leg syndrome.  A main feeding varicose vein is sealed from within by means of a fine rotating catheter used in conjunction with a special chemical agent.   Clarivein® can be carried out using very little local anaesthetic and has been associated with less bruising compared to other treatments.  Patients are able to go home 30 minutes after the procedure.
