What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are veins that have become enlarged and are visible just below the surface of the skin. Smaller veins in the skin itself are sometimes called ‘thread veins’ or ‘spider veins’ and these require a different type of treatment which is also available at Chelmsford Medical Centre in Essex.

Varicose veins are caused by a fault in the valves inside the veins. The fault causes the valves to leak, so blood flows backwards, which increases the pressure in the veins and causes them to become swollen.

How can varicose veins be treated?

If you suffer from mild varicose veins you may be able to have these treated with sclerotherapy, which involves a simple injection into the affected vein. For patients with more severe cases of varicose veins you can be treated with endovenous laser therapy (EVLT).

How much does varicose vein treatment cost?

The cost of treatment for varicose veins will vary depending on the severity of your varicose veins and the surgeon you choose. However a rough guide is that laser treatment under a general anaesthetic will cost around £1800. This is inclusive of surgical anaesthetic and facility fees.
