What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins

Varicose veins arise when the valves that control the flow of blood within the vein become faulty. These valves prevent blood flowing back down the leg after it has been pumped up by the movement of the leg muscles. If the valves don’t stop the blood flowing back down the leg it gathers where there is a weakness in the wall of the vein causing the vein to enlarge.

For many people they can be unsightly; can cause discomfort, itching and aching; and in rare cases can lead to ulceration of the leg. Varicose vein treatment aims to remove the pain and discomfort, and improve the cosmetic appearance of the leg. The achievement of an improved cosmetic appearance may also require follow up minor treatment to remove any remaining lumps

Varicose vein treatments

Whichever route of varicose vein treatment you take, you can be assured of a high standard of clinical care in a clean and comfortable environment. After your initial assessment and a discussion with your specialist, a treatment recommendation will be made that is appropriate for your specific needs.

Varicose vein surgery

Varicose vein surgery usually involves the “stripping” of the long saphenous vein above the knee. This procedure may be done under general or local anaesthetic and your consultant will discuss the options with you at your consultation. The surgeon will make the primary incision to access the saphenous vein and may make a number of other minor incisions to separate the superficial veins from it. The procedure usually takes about an hour for one leg.

Varicose vein laser treatment

Varicose vein laser treatment is usually performed under local anaesthetic and, in some cases, a mild sedation. The consultant will mark the position of the end of the vein. They’ll then make a small incision at the lower end and pass a catheter inside the vein. Once the catheter is in the right place, a laser probe is then passed up the catheter to the groin. As the laser probe is removed, short bursts of energy are used to seal the vein. The procedure usually takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour for one leg.

Benefits of laser varicose vein treatment

If you choose to have your varicose veins removed by laser treatment, rather than surgery:

  • You will spend less time in hospital

  • You will have less bruising after the operation

  • You can return to normal activities more quickly

VNUS closure® procedure

The VNUS closure® procedure of removing varicose veins involves ‘key-hole’ heating and closing the vein from within, using radiofrequency energy. The consultant will scan and mark the position of the end of the vein in the groin. A special catheter is then inserted into the vein through a small 2-3mm cut just below the knee. Once positioned, radiofrequency energy is gently delivered to seal and shut the faulty vein. Following this procedure most people have an instant relief of symptoms. The procedure generally takes around 30 to 40 minutes and you could be free to leave in as little as an hour after treatment.

This is usually performed whilst you are awake under local anaesthetic on a walk in walk out basis, although it can also be performed under general anaesthetic.

What are thread veins?

Thread veins are extremely common and harmless and may affect the face, arms and legs. They appear as thin red/purple lines and may not look very nice, but they should not affect your circulation, nor cause you any long-term health problems. It’s not known what causes them, but commonly cited reasons are changes in temperature, smoking, hormonal changes, alcohol and prolonged standing, as well as genetics.

Thread vein treatment

For thread vein treatment you can either opt to have a series of non-surgical small virtually painless injections that inject the vein with a special solution into the affected area, or have laser treatment where the walls of the vein are heated until they disintegrate. Neither treatment takes long, but may need to be repeated to achieve the best results.
