Varicose vein treatment - Common questions

Varicose vein treatment using laser

If you would like to learn about varicose vein treatment using laser (ELVeS), and the benefits of varicose vein treatment using laser (ELVeS),  the information on this page will interest you.

The following advice on laser treatment of varicose veins has been provided by Biolitec, developers of the ELVeS™ (Endo Laser Vein System). ELVeS™  is an innovative and complete solution for the treatment of varicose veins.

This new treatment, which avoids varicose vein surgery, is available at the London Clinic and through Sweeney Chaloner Surgical ChambeSweeney Chaloner Surgical Chambers.rs.

What is the ELVeS procedure?

ELVeS, Endo Laser Vein System, is a new laser treatment for superficial reflux of the greater saphenous vein - a problem which often leads to the formation of varicose veins.  ELVeS avoids the need for varicose vein surgery. Laser light energy, administered intravenously, causes vein walls to shrink.  This results in complete closure, thus eliminating the varicose vein.

How can I get more information?

Consult your doctor or physician – they are the experts on varicose veins treatment, and can address your specific concerns based on your medical history.

What is the alternative to this treatment?

Before the ELVeS laser treatment was available, the most effective treatment for faulty saphenous veins was varicose vein surgery which involved surgical ligation and stripping – an expensive procedure that requires general anesthesia and hospitalization.  Surgical vein stripping can also leave a number of scars from the incisions doctors make to remove the vein.

Are there alternative minimally invasive treatments of varicose veins available?

Yes.  Another alternative for this type of  treatment of varicose veins is sclerotherapy, the injection of an irritant to close a vein.  In the long-term, however, sclerotherapy is rarely successful when used as the primary form of varicose vein treatment – with symptoms often returning within a few years.

How successful is the ELVeS Treatment?

biolitec’s ELVeS treatment may be the most effective therapy for superficial reflux of the greater saphenous vein available today.  Individual studies using the ELVeS treatment have produced better than 98% success rates with excellent long-term results!

Is the loss of this vein a problem?

No.  Since there are many veins in the leg, the blood from the faulty veins simply flows through healthy veins after the ELVeS treatment.

What are the complications of this procedure?

Though any medical procedure has potential complications, it is very rare that a patient should experience any complications from the treatment of varicose veins by the ELVeS laser treatment.

Are lasers dangerous?

No. Medical lasers have been used for decades.  In fact, it is almost impossible to imagine a modern medical center without a laser because they are so beneficial to both patients and doctors.

During the ELVeS treatment, you will be given a pair of special glasses to wear to protect your eyes because laser light can harm eyesight the same way sunlight can.
