St John and St Elizabeth is truly unique - offering the highest quality sports injury care to patients.
The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth was founded in 1856. The hospital is one of the country's largest independent charity hospitals and the UK’s premier Catholic hospital. At The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth they pride themselves on the quality of their sports injury care services and the quality of their consultants and staff, who they believe to be the very best in their profession.
Whether you are a professional athlete or an occasional one, injury is painful and debilitating. The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth has a comprehensive team which include physiotherapists, orthopaedic surgeons, and rheumatologists recognising that occasionally you might need the support of a team to get you back on the go.
You do not always need to be referred by your doctor to access this service, although the hospital does prefer to communicate with them in managing your treatment.
Physiotherapy at this specialist sports injury clinic
Injuries are often first assessed in the Physiotherapy Department and the majority are treated without the need for investigation or further medical or surgical intervention.
The Physiotherapy Department is staffed by chartered physiotherapists who have a wealth of experience in assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of sport and recreational injuries.
Many of the physiotherapists have experience of working with a variety of international and national sporting organisations and venues.
The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth also offers advice on training for events such as marathons and skiing, as poor training can result in nasty injury, whilst good advice can prevent so many unnecessary trips to the doctor or even worse, failure to participate.
Medical support for sports injuries
If further opinion is required there are many orthopaedic/rheumatology consultants who have an interest in sports injury based at the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth. Between these consultant groups there is a wide spectrum of speciality. Many of the consultants at the hospital work with elite athletes in the fields of football, golf, cricket, rugby, athletics, ballet, tennis, and skiing.
Imaging
Imaging is a growing area in the assessment of sports injuries - a comprehensive service is onsite with x-ray, CT, MRI, and ultrasound fully available.
Podiatry
Many sports injuries require the intervention of a podiatrist. The hospital has podiatrists consulting and they are equipped with treadmills and force plates to assess gait.
