Where can I find expert stroke rehabilitation in London?
The Stroke Unit at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth is located in St John's Wood, London, just 10 minutes from Harley Street. Patients are cared for by a team of leading consultant neurologists and physicians, supported by physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other related health care professionals. As part of a large private hospital, the Stroke Unit has access to the most up-to-date facilities including the latest MRI scanners, CT scanners and cardiac assessments.
Recovery from a stroke can be a long process and the ensuite bedrooms at the Stoke Unit are designed to be bright and spacious. Family and friends are always welcome to visit. A full outpatient service is available on discharge.
What is a stroke?
A person
experiences a stroke when the blood supply in the brain is cut off due to a
clot or haemorrhage, resulting in weakness or paralysis in a limb,
difficulty speaking, loss of vision, numbness and/or tingling down one
side of the body. A person may also experience a mini-stroke or
transient ischaemic attack (TIA), where the interruption to the blood
supply is temporary. If these signs disappear quickly, the patient should still be assessed urgently by a GP or taken to accident and emergency.
What should I do if someone has a stroke?
It is essential that any patient with a suspected stroke be admitted to an accident and emergency department initially by calling 999. This is so that anti-blood clotting medication can be administered (thrombolysis). Following this treatment urgent admission to the Stroke Unit can be arranged.

On admission to the Stroke Unit, a full assessment will be made by the highly experienced Stroke Unit Consultant Neurologists and Consultant Physicians:

Offering individualised stroke rehabilitation
Following
initial assessment, an individual rehabilitation programme is developed
for each patient aimed at helping them to recover as fully as possible
and learn to cope with any permanent disabilities that they may have.
Working with the neurologists and physicians to provide a
multidisciplinary Stroke Care Team are:
- Physiotherapists
- Occupational therapists
- Speech and language therapists
- Neuropsychologists
- Dieticians
Providing on-going stroke care
The aim of the Stroke
Unit at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth is to get patients
safely back to their home environment as quickly as possible. The
experienced Discharge Co-ordinators are able to assist with this process
and can help with transfer of care to a residential or nursing home, if
necessary. On-going outpatient physiotherapy and occupational therapy are available.
