What are eating disorders?
Eating disorders are manifested by obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours around food. Symptoms vary between patients and some may have a mix of symptoms.
Eating disorders are generally associated with people who have low self-esteem and feelings of self-loathing. They can often manifest themselves in high achieving individuals who have an obsessive desire to seek and achieve perfection.
Call us today for information on clinics that specialise in eating disorders both here and abroad.
What is alcohol or drug addiction?
Alcohol or drug addiction, also known as alcoholism and alcohol dependence, is a progressive degenerative disease that includes the following four symptoms:
-
tolerance
-
the loss of control
-
physical dependence
-
craving
Frequently people engage in alcohol or drug abuse at different points in their lives, although this does not mean, however, that they are an addict. An addict is also not necessarily someone that uses every day. They could be someone that binges on alcohol or drugs sporadically. Either way, the addict is someone that is unable to drink or use in moderation consistently.
What is trauma?
The term ‘trauma’ or ‘post-traumatic stress disorder’ is used to describe a range of psychological symptoms people may experience following a traumatic event. A traumatic event can take on any number of different forms including verbal, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, being neglected or abandoned in childhood or adolescence, war, rape or being the victim of violent crime.
Around 30% of people exposed to such a stressful event will develop PTSD. PTSD can emerge months or sometimes years after a traumatic experience, affecting a person’s ability to lead their life.
