PROMETA™ for cocaine addiction

PROMETA™ is a drug addiction treatment protocol designed to correct the long-term physiological effects induced by repeated exposure to cocaine and crack cocaine. The protocols are designed to address the impacts of cocaine dependence on:

• Your brain. Medications in the PROMETA protocol target the chemical receptors in the brain and nerves impacted by cocaine abuse.

• Your body. Nutritional supplements help replace the important vitamins that are often diminished in cocaine-dependent persons.

• Your life. The PROMETA protocol provides for some follow-up group or individual counselling. Participation in ongoing after care programs is encouraged, and considered an essential component of the recovery process.

How PROMETA™ is different

ProMETA drug addiction treatment is effective and discreet.  ProMETA does not require long periods away from home or work and for professionals and executives, can be completed in 3 to 4 days.

• PROMETA is different from traditional drud addiction therapies – such as group therapy, abstinence, and behavioural modification – that focus solely on the psychosocial aspects of the dependence.
• PROMETA focuses on the underlying physiology of the disease and targets the brain receptors thought to play a central role in the disease process.
• PROMETA is designed to address the physical symptoms of dependence, such as cravings, withdrawal, and anxiety.
• PROMETA can be used as a complement to traditional psychosocial therapies.  Dependence is a complex disease, and the best outcomes are believed to derive from an approach that addresses the physiological aspects of addiction in addition to the psychological and social components. A substance-dependent individual who is freed from the physiological symptoms of addiction may be able to attain greater success with traditional psychosocial therapy.

PROMETA™ protocol for cocaine dependence

The PROMETA protocol consists of 4 steps:

• A comprehensive medical exam, including urine and blood tests.

• Administration of both oral (by mouth) and intravenous (through a vein) medications and nutritional supplements over 3 consecutive days.

• A second medically-supervised treatment of 2 visits on consecutive days, about 3 weeks after the initial treatment.

• One month of prescription medications and nutritional supplements, along with individualised after care

Understanding your treatment

The treatment begins with a 2-day course of prescription medications and nutritional supplements. Some patients may require a third day of treatment, and it will be up to the treating physician to make this decision during the course of treatments. This is followed by a brief course of at-home medications and nutritional supplements taken for approximately 1 month.

PROMETA treatment is discreet, and does not require long periods away from home or work. Treatment takes place at a hospital facility or physician practice that has been trained and licensed to use PROMETA.

Following medical treatment using the PROMETA treatment protocol, patients participate in after care, such as counselling or group support, which is considered an essential part of the recovery process. The specific type of therapy will be discussed and agreed upon with the PROMETA-treating physician.

PROMETA is not for everyone

Drug addiction treatment with PROMETA is not appropriate for everyone. The PROMETA-treating physician must make the treatment decision for each individual patient regarding the appropriateness of using the PROMETA treatment protocols during detoxification or any other stage of recovery.

• PROMETA is not designed for use with those diagnosed with dependence to opiates, benzodiazepines

• PROMETA may not be appropriate for use in all patients, and should not be used in women who are or who plan to be pregnant or nursing during the course of the treatment.

• PROMETA is not designed for use in patients under the age of 18.

• Other prescribing restrictions may apply.

Treatment outcomes

While there is no cure for substance dependence, PROMETA offers a promising new approach to the management of dependence on alcohol, cocaine, or methamphetamines. The PROMETA protocols are designed to minimise withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, improve mental clarity, and support the patient with a follow-up program that is designed to help prevent relapse.

After care

Because of the complexity of addiction, the company believe that most patients will benefit from a combination of medical and behavioural therapy. In addition to the medical component, the PROMETA™ treatment has a behavioural component often referred to as After Care or Continuing Care, which is considered essential to the recovery process.

Patients and their families should actively participate in the development of after care plans. Family members may also benefit from after care programs.
