What is addiction?
The term 'addiction' is used to describe a devotion, attachment, dedication or inclination. Today though, 'addiction' describes a recurring compulsion to engage in an activity, despite harmful consequences to one's health, mental state or social life.
The term usually refers to drug or alcohol compulsions, but it is sometimes applied to problem gambling, impulse buying, compulsive shopping, compulsive overeating, etc. Many factors may cause addiction including genetic, biological/pharmacological and social factors, and this continues to be the source of much discussion and disagreement.
Integrated Dual Diagnosis addiction treatment
Dual Diagnosis is the integrated process of simultaneously treating both the addictive behaviour and any underlying trauma, mental health issues or psychological root sources that contribute to addictive behaviour. The Dual Diagnosis approach sets out to empower clients beyond recovery, to give them the tools and confidence to regain control of their lives, helping them achieve lasting, lifelong freedom from addiction.
Developing an individualised treatment plan for clients is challenging and requires great care. Issues with drugs and alcohol and compulsive behaviours often include psychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder, so it is essential to differentiate between substance induced and pre-existing mental illness when treating clients.
A unique detox facility and programme in Ireland
