What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

The prostate, a gland that produces semen, is only found in men.  It is located next to the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis) and if the gland starts to enlarge due to cancer or, more commonly, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia it can cause the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Passing urine more often, especially at night
  • Having to rush to the toilet to pass urine

The urologists at BMI Healthcare are able to perform all the tests and scans necessary to assess these symptoms and stage and grade any cancer found in order to plan the optimum treatment for each individual.

Prostate cancer treatment at BMI Healthcare

The treatment for prostate cancer will depend on how far the cancer has grown and spread (the TNM stage), the grade of the tumour (the Gleason score or how abnormal the cells are on a scale of 1-5), the age and general health of the patient, and information obtained from the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test.  The specialists at BMI Healthcare are highly experienced in offering advice on all the different treatment options available and designing a treatment programme to suit the individual.  Treatments for prostate cancer include:

Monitoring the cancer

Prostate cancers, especially in older men, tend to develop very slowly and initial treatment may involve regular monitoring to assess how the cancer may or may not develop in the future.

Surgery for prostate cancer

Known as a radical prostatectomy, surgery for prostate cancer involves removing the whole gland and the seminal vesicles.  It is usually offered to younger patients with a high grade tumour that has not spread out of the protective capsule of the prostate.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

HIFU is a new, minimally invasive technique that uses high frequency ultrasound energy to pinpoint and destroy cancer cells in the prostate gland.  It does not damage the surrounding tissues and nerves and is a painless and safer alternative to surgery.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a new, specialist technique that kills the cancer cells in early stage prostate cancer by freezing them.

Radiotherapy

External radiotherapy and seed implantation brachytherapy, where radioactive seeds are implanted into the prostate, are used when a cancer has not moved out of the prostate capsule.   Once a cancer has spread beyond the capsule, radiotherapy may be used to shrink secondary tumours, relieving pain and slowing down the spread of the disease.

Hormone therapy

Lowering testosterone levels by means of medication can reduce the chances of an early cancer recurring after treatment, or shrink or slow down a more advanced tumour.  The use of hormone therapy depends on the grade and stage of the cancer and usually works well, although the cancer can stop responding after a few years.

Chemotherapy and steroid treatment

Chemotherapy and steroids are used to shrink tumours and slow the growth of a spreading cancer when hormone therapy is no longer effective.
