The London Foot and Ankle Centre: Private podiatry, foot and ankle surgery in London

The London Foot and Ankle Centre

A centre of excellence

The London Foot and Ankle Centre provides services in St John's Wood and London Bridge Hospital and is the largest and most established foot and ankle service in the UK.

The LFAC was founded in 2003 by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Mark Davies to provide dedicated, specialist foot and ankle treatment, with surgeons and podiatrists working closely together in a team.

Podiatry is the field of healthcare specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot and ankle and aspects of the lower limbs. Podiatrists, Antony Kontos and Rina Bimbashi and are highly experienced and specialise in distinctive fields of podiatry.

Antony Kontos is highly trained podiatric surgeon and experienced in all aspects of podiatry, including treatment for common conditions such as plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, diabetic foot conditions, skin lesions, nail disorders and verrucas.

Rina Bimbashi specialises in biomechanics and gait analysis, with extensive experience in treating many musculoskeletal problems. She has a special interest in treating athletes and assessing running technique and running footwear using video gait analysis.

Where can I get treatment with the LFAC?

The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth

Situated in St John’s Wood, to the north of Central London, St John and St Elizabeth is one of the most respected independent private hospitals in the UK.

London Bridge Hospital

Located on the South Bank of the River Thames, London Bridge Hospital is part of the HCA group and provides some of the most up-to-date hospital facilities in the UK.

Foot and ankle problems

During the average lifetime our feet will cover a distance equivalent to walking four times around the world. So it's not surprising that 75 per cent of people will experience foot or ankle problems at some stage during their lives.

The LFAC guide to foot and ankle conditions covers the most common problems. It is not diagnostic, but has been developed to help patients make an informed decision about their treatment.

The London Foot and Ankle Centre offers multi-disciplinary care and can provide all appropriate forms of diagnosis and treatment, including physiotherapy and podiatry as well as surgery.

Treatments available at the London Foot and Ankle Centre

Gait analysis

At LFAC they use a video gait analysis to obtain the most accurate diagnosis of the way our patients walk and run.

The podiatrist carries out an assessment of the patient as they walk or run on a treadmill, and video equipment enables the podiatrist to record the assessment. This is valuable because the podiatrist can show the patient their own gait analysis, slowing the motion down to demonstrate problems in their movement.

It is also very valuable for the elite runners treated at the centre. Running at high speed, the recording allows the podiatrist to detect small movements with precision which would not otherwise be possible.

Orthotics

Orthotics are devices used to alter or modify foot function in order to treat biomechanical foot disorders. They range from simple, in-shoe devices, such as insoles, to custom-made orthotics designed to meet the individual needs of each patient.

The orthotics are created by taking a cast of the individual patient’s foot and designing a device which corrects and balances abnormalities. They also prescribe Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFO), which are worn on the lower leg and foot to support the ankle and hold the foot in the correct position.

These are used often following major nerve damage in the leg or after a stroke.

Biomechanical assessment

A biomechanical assessment is a detailed, complex evaluation of the feet, legs and body while weight bearing and non-weight bearing.

This assessment is then used to provide the patient with an individually tailored programme of exercises or rehabilitation, or if there is a mechanical problem, with an orthotic prescription.
