Orthotics
Orthotics are devices used to alter or modify foot function in order to treat biomechanical foot disorders. They range from simple, in-shoe devices, such as insoles, to custom-made orthotics designed to meet the individual needs of each patient.
The orthotics are created by taking a cast of the individual patient’s foot and designing a device which corrects and balances abnormalities. They also prescribe Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFO), which are worn on the lower leg and foot to support the ankle and hold the foot in the correct position.
These are used often following major nerve damage in the leg or after a stroke.
Biomechanical assessment
A biomechanical assessment is a detailed, complex evaluation of the feet, legs and body while weight bearing and non-weight bearing.
This assessment is then used to provide the patient with an individually tailored programme of exercises or rehabilitation, or if there is a mechanical problem, with an orthotic prescription.
