Dr. Dee Dawson BSc. M.B.A. M.B.B.S. is a medical practitioner who specialises in the treatment of children and adolescents with anorexia. Twenty years ago she founded Rhodes Farm Clinic, the first unit in the UK to specialise in the treatment of children and adolescents with weight loss problems and eating disorders such anorexia. During the last 20 years she has treated hundreds of children with anorexia and helped their parents keep them at a safe weight.
Dr. Dawson has written two books on weight loss and eating disorders and frequently lectures at conferences and meetings. She retired as Medical Director of Rhodes Farm in February 2011 and now uses her experience to help children who have problems with food. As well as dealing with diet and nutrition, Dr. Dawson addresses the behavioural issues around food and eating. The psychological problems are as important as the diet plan when helping children with anorexia and this has long been recognised in the treatment of anorexia.
With 20 years experience, Dr. Dawson is fully aware of the importance and the role that food plays in children's lives.
Paediatric anorexia treatment in London
During Dr. Dawson's time at Rhodes Farm Clinic, many children were arriving at the clinic for treatment at a late stage in their anorexia illness. They had often been having months of ineffective outpatient treatment whilst their anorexia actually became worse. Outpatient treatment for anorexia is most effective if it is started very early in the course of the illness. Only then, once the child is well nourished and healthy, can psychological issues surrounding
their need to lose weight be addressed.
Treating anorexia is a battle for control. If a professional and parents are working together the illness can be successfully cured, and with a clear and non-negotiable programme most children can be treated as outpatients and should never need in-patient admission.
Both anorexia and bulimia are life threatening illnesses and the sooner
help is sought the less possibility that the illness will become chronic and
continue to blight a person’s life for years, as can happen.
Dr. Dawson's book A Parents’ Guide to Eating Disorders is a useful tool in the very early stages of the illness. But once the illness is well advanced and
there is severe weight loss or regular vomiting it is often necessary to admit children to hospital.
Anorexia treatment programme
You and your child will be seen in a Harley Street suite just a short walk from Oxford Street tube station. Together with Dr. Dawson you will plan and outline your child's meals for the coming week and discuss how to deal with school dinners and other 'out-of-the-house' meals.
The treatment consists of discussions about diet, calories, exercise, and monitoring. Parents will be supported and encouraged to take control of their child’s illness, not to allow the child to make decisions about food or exercise.
You will be given lots of practical advice on how to increase your child's calorie intake. You will also talk about what triggers your child's anorexia and what can be done to help them overcome the desire to under-eat.
If you would like to discuss the programme before you start, please send Dr. Dawson an email with your telephone number and some suitable times for her to call.
