BMI Healthcare: weight loss surgery in the UK
Competitive, fixed-price weight loss surgery including gastric balloon surgery, gastric band surgery and gastric bypass surgery, available nationwide from one of the UK's leading providers of private health care.
Where can I find weight loss surgery in the UK?
BMI healthcare is the largest private hospital group in the UK, providing excellent surgical facilities, supported by the latest technology. They work with expert bariatric and obesity surgeons to offer the full range of surgical procedures for weight loss, including less invasive options, such as the gastric balloon system (BIB system) and the abiliti system. Surgery is available at fixed prices, which include a comprehensive aftercare service.
Am I eligible for weight loss surgery?
BMI
Healthcare abides by the guidelines set out by the National Institute
for Clinical Excellence (NICE) that require patients seeking weight loss
surgery to have tried other methods of losing weight previously and to
have a body mass index (BMI) of over 40, or 35 if there are co-existent
medical conditions.
Weight loss surgery at BMI Healthcare
There are a number of surgical techniques on offer at BMI Healthcare, dependent on factors such as BMI and general health. The surgeon will be able to advise on the best treatment for the individual patient:
-
The abiliti system
- Gastric band surgery
- Gastric bypass surgery
- Sleeve gastrectomy
- Laparoscopic greater curvature plication (LRCP)
Gastric band surgery
Gastric band surgery is a highly effective and reversible method for weight loss, resulting in a loss of half a person's excess weight within two years of surgery, on average. An inflatable band is placed around the top of the stomach creating a small pouch at the top.
Gastric bypass surgery
Gastric bypass surgery is a very effective method of weight loss for morbidly obese people, but it does carry more surgical risk than gastric banding and is difficult to reverse. The stomach is divided into two with staples to create a small pouch and this is attached to a re-routed piece of small intestine to bypass the stomach completely. On average, people lose approximately 70% of their excess weight following gastric bypass surgery.
Gastric balloon surgery (BIB system™)
The BIB system™ for gastric balloon surgery is a less invasive way to lose weight. A soft, silicone balloon is inserted into the stomach and filled with saline, giving a feeling of fullness when eating. The balloon is kept in place for six months and an individualised weight loss programme, supported by specialist nurses and dieticians is implemented to give lasting results.
