LASIK and Wavefront LASIK are relatively pain free and most patients only experience minor discomfort for six to 12 hours after the procedure with vision improving quickly and settling down in two to fours days. Most patients are able to resume their everyday lives quickly after laser eye treatment. Once the anesthetic has worn off patients may experience some irritation and this can last up to four hours. Medicated eye drops are used for the first few weeks to aid the healing process and minimise any temporary discomfort and a night shield should be worn for the first week to prevent rubbing the eyes while sleeping. Occasionally, soft contact lenses are fitted for the first day to further protect the eyes. Patients can return to their office jobs usually the day after having LASIK, provided the after care drops are used properly. Playing sports (apart from contact sports) is safe after one week, and patients can fly within a few days but swimming is not advisable for one month.
Discomfort lasts a little longer (three to four days) after PRK and LASEK but eye drops will alleviate this. After PRK a protective contact lens will be placed on the eye to allow the surface of the eye to heal over a period of several days and after LASEK a bandage contact lens is placed over the cornea for approximately four days but the recovery period is longer than with LASIK and patients will need to take a week off work. Most patients only report mild discomfort after Intraocular Lens Implant surgery which is easily relieved by pain killers like paracetemol. Vision usually stabilises after three days with implant based procedures.
It is a good idea to wear sunglasses or a hat when leaving the clinic or hospital to protect the eyes from sunlight and patients will need to arrange collection/taxis because it is not safe to drive straight after laser eye treatment. Other post op tips include being mindful to keep water and soap away from the eyes (having baths rather than showers is a good idea) and eye make-up should not be worn. Patients should also try to avoid touching, rubbing or screwing up their eyes.
