Oxford Clinic: Private knee surgery in Oxford

Oxford Clinic logo

The Oxford Clinic for Specialist Surgery ("Oxford Clinic") provides patients with fast and reliable access to surgical and non-surgical orthopaedic diagnosis and treatment.  The Oxford Clinic aims to provide a world-class service to all patients with bone, joint and muscle conditions in a clean and friendly environment of clinical excellence.  The founding principles of the organisation include:

  • To provide the highest quality of care for patients

  • Maintain a clean and safe environment

  • Promote clinical excellence

  • Provide gold standard customer service supported by ongoing patient satisfaction surveys

The Oxford Clinic was founded by some of the world’s leading orthopaedic specialists whose core principles include the development and promotion of clinical excellence focused on orthopaedic treatment.   Many of the specialists based at the Oxford Clinic are renowned for their contributions to medicine through clinical research and development of surgical and non-surgical technology.

The founding Consultants partnered with Ascent Health, an international hospital management company, to assist in the delivery of high quality services at a reasonable cost to patients.  The partnership is the first of its kind in the UK and began delivery of services in September 2006.

Knee replacement and other knee surgery

The consultant knee surgeons at the Oxford Clinic perform the whole range of knee operations including some of the most complex procedures that few private facilities are able to offer (including partial joint replacement and revision surgery).

About half of their patients have had a primary hip or knee replacement, including the Oxford Partial Knee replacement that some of their surgeons have designed and continue to develop.

Some of the more common operations are listed below.

  • Knee arthroscopy – for diagnosis of unexplained pain in the knee joint, repair of torn cartilage (meniscus) and removal of loose bodies, bursitis.
  • Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction – for ruptured or torn anterior cruciate ligament ("ACL"), often caused by impact injuries when playing sport but also caused by ordinary wear and tear.
  • Posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction – while the symptoms are very similar to those of a ruptured ACL posterior cruciate ligament ("PCL") is a much less commonly performed procedure and can be caused by hyper extension of the knee.
  • Patello-femoral resurfacing – where osteoarthritis affecting only the patella ("kneecap") and front of the femur is causes pain and discomfort this type of procedure can be appropriate.
  • Partial knee replacement – for pain and or disability caused by osteoarthritic joint degeneration, deformity or other disease that is specific to only one side of the knee joint (usually the medial or inner side), see here.
  • Total knee replacement – for pain caused by osteoarthritic joint degeneration, deformity or other disease affecting both compartments (sides)
  • Revision knee replacement – repeat replacement of the same joint is a more complex operation requiring highly specialised equipment and expertise. Revision can be necessitated by infected or uninfected loosening or other failure of the original prosthesis. Sometimes all components may need to be revised but the tibial, femoral or other implant can be revised alone when only one part is affected

The Oxford Clinic works closely with the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust (“NOC”), a world-renowned centre of excellence in treating bone, joint and muscle conditions.  The Consultants who work at the Oxford Clinic work at the NOC for their NHS commitments – this makes access to their private patients at the Oxford Clinic much better than other private hospitals in the area.

All surgeons operating at the Oxford Clinic are employed by the NHS and are required to meet relevant accreditation criteria.
