Knee replacement (total/unicompartmental)

Knee replacement surgery

Knee replacement surgery is a very common procedure to treat an arthritic knee.  It is usually undertaken when painkillers are no longer effective.  There are two types of knee replacement surgery, and the surgeons at BMI Healthcare are able to recommend the best one for the individual patient, as well as offer some of the most up-to-date surgical techniques.

Total knee replacement surgery

The worn out or diseased joint is replaced by an artificial one made of plastic, metal, ceramic, or a combination of these materials.  The artificial joint should last 15-20 years, relieve pain and restore mobility.

BMI Healthcare also offers total knee replacement surgery using the Signature™ system, which allows the surgeon to create a reconstruction of the knee with MRI prior to the operation.   This enables him to plan the positioning and fitting of the new joint in advance and results in a less invasive procedure.

Partial knee reconstruction surgery

Approximately 25% of patients are suitable for a less invasive technique for knee replacement, the Deuce™ partial knee replacement.  Instead of the whole knee joint being removed, only two thirds of the knee is replaced, less bone is removed and the ligaments are left intact.  The benefits of this procedure are a shorter hospital stay and recovery, and often more natural movement in the knee compared to total knee replacement surgery.

Revision knee replacement surgery

Most knee replacements last up to 20 years, however occasionally they need to be removed and replaced with a new one, perhaps if they have worn out prematurely, or if there is loosening or infection.  This is a more complex operation than primary knee replacement surgery, and BMI Healthcare works with highly experienced orthopaedic surgeons who can advise on, and undertake this procedure.

Knee surgery for ACL reconstruction

ACL reconstruction surgery

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) plays an important role in stabilising the knee joint.  It is common for it to snap (rupture) as a result of a twisting injury to the knee.  This results in the knee 'giving way', especially when making twisting or turning movements.  The surgeons at BMI Healthcare can replace the ACL with a tendon from elsewhere in the body, often the patellar tendon or the hamstring tendon, restoring knee stability and allowing the majority of patients to return to their sporting activities.
