Treatments
Evaluation of the causes of infertility usually begins with the male partner. Sperm counts are evaluated according to World Health Organization and Krugers criteria. If these counts are abnormal, hormonal and ultrasound tests will be conducted. The clinic has an andrology lab and can perform sperm extraction and testicular biopsy. Micro-Tese (Testicular Sperm Extraction) using micro needles can be used to find sperm from azospermic patients.
In the case of the female partner, hormonal levels are monitored and ultrasound and x-ray examinations may be carried out.
Where abnormalities are identified, appropriate infertility treatments will be applied. However, in many cases the cause of the infertility is unknown. Where this is the case, classical treatments such as ovulation induction and artificial insemination may be used.
However, if the classical treatments are unsuccessful, or are inappropriate, IVF/ICSI will be used.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) has revolutionised infertility treatment and resulted in millions of successful births. IN IVF the sperm and egg are placed in the same dish, fertilised embryos being later transferred to the woman's uterus. However, if the sperm count is very low or abnormal, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) may be used. In this procedure, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg to gurantee fertilisation. Unlike other clinics in the western world, there is no surcharge for ICSI at Jinemed Hospital.
Other techniques can be used by Jinemed Hospital to increase the pregnancy rate or deal with other fertility related problems. These include:
