Assisted reproduction techniques used

  • IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is when the fertilisation of the egg by the sperm is carried out artificially, in a laboratory. Eggs are retrieved through an outpatient intervention under local anaesthetic, and husband or partner will deliver a sample of sperm. The sperm is incubated together with the eggs in an incubator at the woman's body temperature. Eggs are examined to see how many of them have been fertilised by the sperm (embryos). Of all the embryos obtained, two or three are usually transferred to the uterine cavity, and the rest are frozen. Read more…

  • ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is a more sophisticated variant of IVF (in vitro fertilisation). It involves the injection of a single sperm into an egg. The treatment and incubation norms are the same as in an IVF process, with the only difference being that the laboratory process is more complex and requires more sophisticated technology. • Egg donation involves the "in vitro" fertilisation of the eggs from a donor with the semen of the egg recipient's partner in a laboratory. The resulting embryos are later placed in the woman's uterus by means of an embryo transfer. The recipient undergoes medical treatment to prepare her uterus for the implantation of the embryos.Read more…

  • Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a new method of Prenatal Diagnosis. It makes it possible to detect possible chromosomal or genetic abnormalities in embryos obtained through In Vitro Fertilisation before they are transferred into the uterus, thereby avoiding the transfer of embryos with those disorders.
