Argentina, the second largest country in area in South America is a plain, rising from the Atlantic to the Chilean border and the towering Andes peaks with Bolivia and Paraguay to the north, and Uruguay and Brazil to the east. The northern area is the swampy and partly wooded Gran Chaco, bordering on Bolivia and Paraguay. It can roughly be divided into three parts: the fertile plains of the Pampas in the central part of the country, the centre of Argentina's agricultural wealth; the flat to rolling plateau of Patagonia, a region of cool, arid steppes with some wooded and fertile sections, in the southern half down to Tierra del Fuego; and the rugged Andes mountain range along the western border with Chile, with the highest point located in the province of Mendoza.
