Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI) using a prepared sample of sperm from a partner or donor is often used with or without drug stimulation of the ovaries to increase the chances of conception. The cycle is monitored with ultrasound scans and an HCG injection is given to trigger ovulation. Insemination is performed at the time of ovulation, which occurs about forty hours after the injection.

Super-ovulation combined with IUI can be used in cases of hostile or poor quality cervical mucus, low sperm counts and unexplained infertility.
