The potential donor has to undergo a variety of screening tests before being accepted for treatment.  Careful screening minimizes the risk of transmissible diseases or hereditary problems. 

 

Potential donors must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 35. The HFEA state that no one over the age of 35 should become an egg provider except in exceptional circumstances.
  • Be non-smokers
  • Have no history of severe endometriosis
  • Have no personal history of transmissible disease
  • Have no personal or family history of inheritable disorders
  • Have no history of previous low ovarian response to ovarian stimulation.
  • Have both ovaries

 

 

Potential donors will also be required to supply a full medical history and undertake an examination and a series of blood tests, which include the following:

  • HIV x 2 Prior to and during treatment cycle
  • Hepatitis B and C must be repeated 6 monthly
  • VDRL
  • Cytomegalovirus
  • Rubella
  • Blood group
  • Blood count
  • Day 3 FSH, LH, Inhibin B
  • Cervical swab for Chlamydia
  • Scan
  • Cystic Fibrosis / Karyotype
  • Sickle Cell (if applicable)

 

 

If you wish to use a ‘known’ donor, such as a sister or friend, the same screening and counselling criteria will be applicable as for an anonymous donor.

 

Counselling for the donor is available at all times, and she is free to change her mind at any time during the recruitment process.
