What is hycosy?
Hycosy is a procedure to check the patency of your fallopian tubes prior to intrauterine insemination (IUI). It is a non-invasive procedure that usually takes approximately 15 minutes and the result is available immediately. It is usually carried out between day eight and day ten of your cycle. You will be asked to telephone the Clinic on day one or two of your period to arrange an appointment.
Prior to your hycosy procedure you will be asked to have a cervical chlamydia swab. The result must be available before the procedure can be performed.
The results of the procedure will be discussed on the same day and treatment can be planned accordingly.
What does hycosy involve?
A small thin catheter (tube) is passed through the cervix into your uterus and a small balloon is inflated to keep the catheter in position. A vaginal ultrasound scan is carried out to locate the uterus and ovaries. Echo contrast fluid is inserted into the catheter and tubal patency is checked via the ultrasound scan. Once this has been established, the ultrasound scan and catheter are removed.
It is advisable to take some form of analgesia (pain killer) prior to the hycosy procedure.
What are the possible side effects of hycosy?
You will be asked prior to booking your appointment for the hycosy whether you are allergic to latex or any contrast medium. The hycosy procedure will not be performed if you are allergic to any of the above, and other arrangements can be made.
You may experience some abdominal discomfort and it is safe to take analgesia as appropriate.
It is advisable to bring someone with you to accompany you home.
