Comprehensive fertility investigations

Infertility is usually defined as the inability to conceive after one year of trying to get pregnant.  After this time, most couples will be referred by their GP or gynaecologist to determine what is causing the delay in conception.  The specialists at BMI Healthcare use a range of investigations to ascertain where the problem lies:

  • Laparoscopy and hysteroscopy
  • Blood tests
  • Semen analysis
  • Chlamydia testing

Offering private IVF treatment and ICSI

Two of the procedures most commonly requested at BMI Healthcare are:

In vitro fertilisation (IVF)

Following a course of fertility drugs to suppress a woman's natural hormones and stimulate the ovaries, the mature eggs are surgically removed using an ultrasound-guided needle.  The eggs are then fertilised in a laboratory using the partner's or donor sperm.  By the third day they will have developed into embryos and up to three will be transferred into the womb, to increase the chance of conception.  This technique is suitable for women with conditions affecting the fallopian tubes or whose bodies are hostile to sperm, and when the male partner has a low sperm count.

Find your nearest hospital that offers in vitro fertilisation (IVF)

Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

When a male partner is found to have a very low sperm count or fertilisation with IVF was unsuccessful, a single sperm can be injected directly into an egg to fertilise it.  This technique can sometimes also be used when a man has had a vasectomy.
