The Oxford Clinic was founded by some of the world’s leading orthopaedic specialists whose core principles include the development and promotion of clinical excellence focused on orthopaedic treatment.   Many of the specialists based at the Oxford Clinic are renowned for their contributions to medicine through clinical research and development of surgical and non-surgical technology.  

The founding Consultants partnered with Ascent Health, an international hospital management company, to assist in the delivery of high quality services at a reasonable cost to patients.  The partnership is the first of its kind in the UK and began delivery of services in September 2006. 

Hip replacement and resurfacing surgery

The consultant hip surgeons at the Oxford Clinic perform the whole range of hip operations, including joint replacement and highly complex surgery that few private hospitals are able to offer. 

About half of their patients have had a primary hip or knee replacement, including the Oxford Partial Knee replacement that some of their surgeons have designed and continue to develop. 

The most common operations are listed below. 

• Hip arthroscopy – for unknown hip pain (diagnostic procedure), milder forms of arthritis, repair of torn labrum (cartilage in the joint), synovitis (inflammation of membrane lining the joint), diagnosis and clearance of infection, removal of loose bodies (such as small pieces of bone that have become loose), tumour biospy and excision.

• Hip resurfacing arthroplasty – for osteoarthritic joint degeneration, differs from total hip replacement by being 'bone-preserving' and is usually performed on younger patients or those with otherwise good bone mass who may need another operation later in life.
• Total hip replacement – for pain caused by osteoarthritic joint degeneration, deformity or other disease.
• Revision hip replacement – repeat replacement of the same joint is a more complex operation requiring highly specialised equipment and expertise, revision can be necessitated by infected or uninfected loosening or other failure of the original prosthesis. Sometimes all components may need to be revised but the femoral stem or acetabulum can be revised alone when only one part is affected

The Consultants, nurses and therapists are highly skilled and are able to meet the heavy demands of treating complex orthopaedic conditions.  The Oxford Clinic has a resident doctor trained in advanced life support onsite at all times.

The Oxford Clinic works closely with the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust (“NOC”), a world-renowned centre of excellence in treating bone, joint and muscle conditions.  The Consultants who work at the Oxford Clinic work at the NOC for their NHS commitments – this makes access to their private patients at the Oxford Clinic much better than other private hospitals in the area.   

All surgeons operating at the Oxford Clinic are employed by the NHS and are required to meet relevant accreditation criteria. This includes participation in ongoing professional development as set out by both the Oxford Clinic and the NHS.  Many Oxford Clinic consultants also work in research and teaching organisations, including the University of Oxford.

A full range of care

Depending on each individual's needs both day surgery and inpatient surgery is offered. Non-surgical treatments for pain management and rehabilitation as well as occupational  therapy and physiotherapy are offered either to complement surgery or as stand-alone treatments.

The clinic provides comprehensive pre-operative assessment clinics , , as appropriate for your treatment, as well as a range of diagnostic services.  The diagnostic services include:

• X-ray - including fluoroscopy

• ultrasound

• MRI - includes state of the art ‘open’ MRI scanner for patients who suffer from claustrophobia or require investigation of extremities as well as a new 3 Tesla MRI scanner

All imaging is provided in partnership with the NOC reporting is carried out by Consultant Radiologists who are specialists in musculoskeletal radiology.
