The Exeter Hip Foundation is an independent organisation established to provide a personalised hip replacement experience. The members of the Foundation also have responsibilities for the further training of surgeons who are to specialise in hip replacement operations and for continuing research to further improve the outcome of surgery. All the surgeons specialise solely in lower limb joint replacement and continue to develop the Exeter Hip.

The Exeter Hip Foundation have teamed up with Trust Health Limited who will make all the necessary arrangements for your hospital appointments and admissions, thereby making the whole experience as relaxing and worry-free as possible.

"The professionalism and attention to detail by everyone involved provided me with the reassurance to make a speedy recovery from my hip operation. The future looks bright. No pain and the mobility in my joint has returned allowing me to improve the quality of my life dramatically."   Read what others say about the Exeter Hip Foundation

The hip surgeons

The outcome of hip replacement surgery is defined by the surgeon who implants the hip as well as the type of joint replacement that is used. The best results are reported from centres where surgeons specialise in joint replacement and carry out large numbers of these operations.

The Exeter Hip Foundation is led by four key surgeons who together have over fifty years of experience with the Exeter Hip. The surgeons operate from a local private hospital, with staff who have a wealth of experience in hip replacement.:

The Exeter hip replacement

The Exeter Hip Replacement was designed by Professor Robin Ling of the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Hospital, Exeter and Dr Clive Lee of the University of Exeter.

The Exeter Hip was introduced into clinical practice in November 1970 and has become the most widely and commonly used cemented hip replacement in the world, with over 35 years of clinical results.

It has been so successful that very few changes have had to be made to the design of the components over the years. Yet ongoing research and development has made it a very ‘modern’ implant such that it will continue to be used with confidence well into the 21st century.

The long term results of this hip are outstanding and The Exeter Hip can be offered with confidence to patients of all ages.

Primary hip replacement

Total hip replacement can now be successfully performed in patients of all ages and with all types of hip pathology. Any patient with hip trouble that is significantly interfering with quality of life, whether this is caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fracture, avascular necrosis or congenital hip dislocation, can undergo an Exeter Hip Replacement, with the confidence that outcomes beyond 30 years are known and not merely assumed or predicted.

Surgical technique has advanced significantly over the last 5 to 10 years with much smaller incisions and less soft tissue dissection aiding more rapid recovery and early discharge from hospital. Modern bearing surfaces with reduced wear properties, including ceramics and the latest highly cross linked polyethylene, and the use of larger head sizes to reduce the risk of dislocation, have made it possible for patients to return to active sports such as skiing, surfing & windsurfing, but contact sports are still discouraged.

In Exeter they constantly monitor their complication rates - their infection rates are as low as anywhere in the country and MRSA risk is close to zero.

The Exeter Hip is hugely successful with over 90% of patients being totally pain-free following surgery. Success rates, with the endpoint being loosening of the socket or stem, are better than 95% at 15 years and many patients have now had their Exeter Hip Replacement in position for over 30 years.

The four surgeons forming the Exeter Hip Foundation perform only hip and knee replacements and patients can therefore undergo surgery with the confidence that their hip operations are being performed by joint replacement specialists.

Complex and revision hip surgery

The Exeter Hip surgeons have become recognised as specialists in revision hip replacement surgery thanks to the pioneering research and development work carried out in Exeter over the last twenty years. With the surgical techniques they have helped develop, the Exeter Hip team are able to reverse the damage done to the bone by the old prosthesis, and replace bone lost during the loosening process.

Through their research programme the Exeter Hip team continue to study and publish the development and results of these surgical techniques. The team welcomes visiting surgeons from around the world who come to gain more experience in revision hip surgery through the hip courses and fellowship programme run at Exeter.

Revision hip replacement surgery is challenging and should only be performed by surgeons who have received extensive specialist training. The Exeter Hip surgeons are recognised specialists in their field, skilled in a wide range of surgical techniques, which they tailor to the individual needs of each patient in order to achieve the optimum result.
