Where can I find treatment for Gilmore's Groin and hernia in London?

The Gilmore Groin and Hernia Clinic is situated at 108 Harley Street, London.  It was established by the pioneer of the technique for treating groin disruption, Mr Jerry Gilmore.  The surgeons at the Gilmore Groin and Hernia Clinic have over 40 years joint experience in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition and are also experts in treatment of hernias.

What is Gilmore's Groin?

Gilmore's Groin is also known as sportsman's groin, groin disruption syndrome, or, incorrectly, sportsman's hernia.  First recognised by London surgeon Jerry Gilmore in 1980, Gilmore's Groin is not a hernia, which would involve a hole in the muscle resulting in a small lump, but a muscle disruption where the groin muscles have been pulled away from their normal positions.  It is a reasonably common injury in kicking sports such as football and rugby.

Symptoms of Gilmore's Groin

  • Pain on running and twisting
  • Stiffness and soreness the day after sport
  • Pain on rising from a low position
  • Pain on sneezing and coughing

Diagnosis of Gilmore's Groin

This is based on an accurate history and an examination of the superficial inguinal rings.  MRI and high frequency ultrasound may be used to diagnose other groin problems that may be causing similar symptoms.  The highly experienced surgeons at The Gilmore Groin and Hernia Clinic are experts at recognising this frequently misdiagnosed condition.

Treatment of Gilmore's Groin

An established rehabilitation programme designed as postoperative therapy for Gilmore's Groin can often be used preoperatively to avoid surgery.  When, however, sportsmen can no longer play or fail to respond to physiotherapy, surgical repair is necessary.  Under general anaesthetic, the whole length of the groin is exposed and the muscle layers are realigned using dissolvable stitches.  A permanent layer of stitching is then added to act as a scaffold.

The Gilmore Groin and Hernia Clinic has a 97% success rate in professional soccer patients treated surgically for Gilmore's Groin.

The Gilmore's Groin rehabilitation programme

This is divided into four stages to be completed in a time frame suited to the individual.  It is expected that professional sportsmen will be able to return to competition in 4 weeks; amateurs may take 6-8 weeks.
