Where can I find hernia surgery in the UK?
BMI Healthcare is the largest private hospital group in the UK. It is able to provide hernia repair surgery throughout the UK at its comfortable and well equipped hospitals, using experienced specialist consultant general surgeons.
Why is hernia surgery necessary?
A hernia occurs when a weakness in the wall of the abdomen allows fat, blood vessels or part of the intestines to poke through, causing a small lump. Although the lump can often be pushed back in, the defect will not heal itself and, if left, can become a serious threat to health as the structures poking through may get trapped and lose their blood supply (strangulated hernia).
Hernia repair surgery at BMI Healthcare
The surgeons at BMI Healthcare are highly experienced in the treatment of all hernia types, including:
- Inguinal hernia - mostly seen in men and appearing as a swelling in the groin or scrotum
- Femoral hernia - appearing as a painful lump in the groin or upper part of the thigh
- Umbilical hernia - appearing as a lump near the navel
- Epigastric hernia - appearing as a lump between the navel and the sternum
- Incisional hernia - appearing as a lump in an existing abdominal scar
- Sports hernia or Gilmore's Groin - presenting as pain in the groin. Not a true hernia as there is no lump, but surgery can realign the muscles and relieve the pain
Experts in keyhole surgery for hernia repair
The surgeons at BMI Healthcare use two keyhole (laparoscopic) techniques in the repair of abdominal hernias, totally extraperitoneal (TEP) and transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP). In both cases a laparoscope is inserted through a small incision to view the hernia, the protruding contents are pushed back and a sheet of mesh is put over the defect to repair and strengthen it. A TAPP repair is carried out from within the abdomen and a TEP repair is performed within the layers of the abdominal wall.
Providing open surgery for hernia repair
Sometimes the surgeon will recommend that it is better to repair a hernia through a 5-10cm incision, rather than using a laparoscope. This is the preferred technique for incisional hernias and some inguinal hernias.
