The Oxford Clinic was founded by some of the world’s leading orthopaedic specialists whose core principles include the development and promotion of clinical excellence focused on orthopaedic treatment.   Many of the specialists based at the Oxford Clinic are renowned for their contributions to medicine through clinical research and development of surgical and non-surgical technology.  

The founding Consultants partnered with Ascent Health, an international hospital management company, to assist in the delivery of high quality services at a reasonable cost to patients.  The partnership is the first of its kind in the UK and began delivery of services in September 2006. 

Hand and wrist treatment and surgery

The consultant hand and wrist surgeons at the Oxford Clinic offer the whole range of hand and wrist treatments.

The most common operations are listed below:

• Carpal tunnel release – symptoms of carpal tunnel compression can include tingling or burning sensation in the palm or fingers and is caused by compression of nerves in the base of the wrist. 
• Ganglion excision – ganglions usually present as an uncomfortable swelling on the back of the wrist filled with a jelly-like substance.
• Dupuytren's fasciectomy – for thickening of subcutaneous tissue that results in a 'curving' of one or more fingers that cannot straighten fully. 
• DeQuervain's tendinosis – for pain at the base of the thumb caused by irritation or constriction of tendons (tendinitis or thickening of the tendons).
• Scaphoid fracture repair – although not always obvious or visible the symptoms often present as a sprain of the wrist or pain at the base the thumb. 
• Trigger finger release – to treat stiffening or catching of a finger's movement and in severe cases when a finger cannot be straightened even with help. 
• Wrist arthroscopy – this can be to diagnose the source of unknown pain or to perform a range of corrective procedures including carpal tunnel release.

The Oxford Clinic works closely with the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust (“NOC”), a world-renowned centre of excellence in treating bone, joint and muscle conditions.  The Consultants who work at the Oxford Clinic work at the NOC for their NHS commitments – this makes access to their private patients at the Oxford Clinic much better than other private hospitals in the area.   

All surgeons operating at the Oxford Clinic are employed by the NHS and are required to meet relevant accreditation criteria. This includes participation in ongoing professional development as set out by both the Oxford Clinic and the NHS.  Many Oxford Clinic consultants also work in research and teaching organisations, including the University of Oxford.

A full range of care

Depending on each individual's needs both day surgery and inpatient surgery is offered. Non-surgical treatments for pain management and rehabilitation as well as occupational  therapy and physiotherapy are offered either to complement surgery or as stand-alone treatments.

The clinic provides comprehensive pre-operative assessment clinics , , as appropriate for your treatment, as well as a range of diagnostic services.  The diagnostic services include:

• X-ray - including fluoroscopy

• ultrasound

• MRI - includes state of the art ‘open’ MRI scanner for patients who suffer from claustrophobia or require investigation of extremities as well as a new 3 Tesla MRI scanner

All imaging is provided in partnership with the NOC reporting is carried out by Consultant Radiologists who are specialists in musculoskeletal radiology.
