Hand surgery for Dupuytren's disease
Dupuytren's disease, also known as Dupuytren's contracture is a condition where benign nodules develop in the connective tissue of the palm of the hand, eventually causing the fingers to become permanently bent. Surgery is indicated in severe cases, when it is no longer possible to use the hand normally. The type of surgery performed is dependent on the severity of the contracture. Most usually the surgeon will use a procedure called a fasciectomy, which involves removal of the connective tissue. There are several variations on this procedure and the surgeon will be able to recommend the best one to suit the individual case.
