What is involved in cataract surgery?
Cataract operations can be performed as day-surgery under either local or general anaesthetic. The operation involves removing the affected lens and replacing it with an artificial one. The specialist will make a small cut into the ‘cornea’ – the clear part of the front of your eye which covers the coloured part (iris) and the pupil. The damaged lens will usually be fragmented using ultrasound and then removed through the cut and replaced with the new one.
