King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust private patients service: Epilepsy treatment in London

Kings International logo

King’s College Hospital in London is a specialist UK centre for epilepsy treatment and surgery.

King’s College Hospital is one of London’s most prestigious teaching hospitals, with a history of clinical excellence dating back to 1840. The Private Patient Service is housed in the Guthrie Wing. Called King’s International, it offers private patients the highest standards of clinical and customer care, whether they are from the UK or overseas (residents of more than 50 countries were treated last year).

Kings College Hospital

Clinical expertise in epilepsy treatment and surgery

  • King's has unrivalled expertise in video-telemetry and magnetic brain stimulation, and specialised EMF and intracortical recordings for epilepsy. The hospital performs some 3,700 EEGs (electroencephalography), 4,100 EMGs (electromyography), 500 evoked potentials each year, as well as providing video telemetry for adults and children.
  • King’s has become one of the UK’s biggest Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) transplantation centres. This treatment, offered to epilepsy patients whose seizures can not be controlled with drugs or surgery, uses an electrical device to stimulate the vagus nerve in the neck. Energy pulses help prevent the electrical activity in the brain that leads to seizures.

  • The Clinical Neurophysiology department is the largest department in the UK, with seven consultant clinical neurophysiologists and 16 technicians providing the full range of investigations in a fully networked, purpose build environment.
  • King's provides clinical/academic teaching for both technical and medical teams within the trust and for staff from other hospitals across the NHS.

A designated General Manager and a Clinical Director lead a highly commended nursing team and pharmacy team dedicated to patient safety and care. Staff keep their clinical skills continuously updated, while ensuring customer service standards are met through the ‘King’s behaviour standards’ programme. All consultants work in the National Health Service (NHS), so their clinical practice is also up to date.
