Treatment of snoring (nocturnal airway obstruction)

A common procedure for nocturnal airway obstruction is the evaluation of the airways by performing a dynamic airway endoscopy.

This allows the airways of the patient to be visualised and pictures to be taken to determine the sites of airway obstruction and snoring generation. This procedure is performed under a light general anaesthetic allowing the patient to "sleep" and generate conditions as near as possible to normal sleep.

The results of this will allow for further treatment options to be discussed with patients. Further procedures for sleep related breathing disorders include laser assisted palatal, tonsillar and tongue base surgery. These are usually performed under a short general anaesthetic and the area in question is carefully removed with laser surgery.
