CancerPartnersUK – transforming the delivery of private cancer care
CancerPartnersUK was set up by a group of cancer experts to improve the overall quality and availability of cancer services across the UK, particularly in radiotherapy.
CancerPartnersUK provides radiotherapy (radiation therapy) treatments for a wide range of cancers, such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer and lung cancer. These treatments are given in purpose-built cancer centres using the very latest forms of radiation equipment and procedures, such as image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).
The private cancer centres are operated by very experienced and expert medical teams specially recruited from leading UK cancer treatment centres and hospitals.
The latest image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT)
Conventional radiotherapy provides high doses of radiation to tumour sites, but in doing so surrounding healthy tissue can sometimes be damaged. IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy) delivers larger doses of radiation to the tumour site, while reducing the amount delivered to surrounding normal tissue, thereby limiting the potential damage.
IGRT (Image Guided Radiotherapy) takes high quality 3D images of cancerous tumours immediately prior to treatment and these are used to ‘guide’ the radiation beam to deliver extremely accurate targeted doses into affected areas avoiding surrounding healthy tissue.
The benefits of IGRT and IMRT radiotherapy
Combining IMRT and IGRT radiotherapy has been shown to optimise the effects of radiotherapy by targeting the required dose to the tumour much more precisely and so avoiding the severity of side effects caused by damage to surrounding normal tissue. This system of radiation therapy is recognised as the very latest treatment of its type anywhere in the world for a wide range of cancers.
CancerPartnersUK is improving access to IMRT and IGRT around the UK
CancerPartnersUK is committed to increasing the availability of IMRT and IGRT radiotherapy to cancer patients in the UK through new purpose-built independent facilities, training and expertise. These regional centres provide patients with comprehensive cancer treatment and the latest therapies that have previously only been available in major centres such as London.
For more information about radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer, CancerPartnersUK has compiled a library of the latest research and published articles, many of them by our cancer expert and founder, Prof Karol Sikora.
Regional radiotherapy centres
Purpose-built radiotherapy cancer treatment centres are located close to established regional hospitals such as Spire Healthcare. CancerPartnersUK has partnered with them so that patients can receive all of their cancer treatments 'under one roof', keeping travel to a minimum.
The first CancerPartnersUK image guided radiotherapy centre opened in Portsmouth in 2009 and then later in January of 2010 CancerPartnersUK opened their imaged guided radiotherapy centre in Southampton. July 2010 will see the opening of a new centre in Elstree, Hertfordshire followed by a unit in Little Aston, Birmingham.
Putting patients first
Here is what some of the first patients and visitors say about the new CancerPartnersUK radiotherapy centres in Portsmouth and Southampton.
"The staff at the centre are so friendly and supportive..."
"I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and, because West Sussex doesn't have a radiotherapy centre, I chose to come to the CancerPartnersUK centre at Havant. When I realised that it was a brand new centre with the latest technology I felt very lucky. The staff at the centre are so friendly and supportive and it is such a relaxing place to come to that I felt completely reassured about my cancer. Even though you would never want to have cancer, I can honestly say that I didn't mind coming here at all - I even miss it now that my treatments have finished!"
Verity Churchill, breast cancer patient
"I just think this centre is great. It's an amazing facility and gives people confidence."
"I've had cancer myself and had this treatment been available, I would have had it. I'm very jealous of the people who are able to be treated here. The key with this technology is accuracy. To be able to target the enemy with such precision is just fantastic. I just think this centre is great. It's an amazing facility and gives people confidence. People in this area are very fortunate to have this centre on their doorstep."
Sir Ranulph Fiennes Bt OBE
"We are very lucky to have this facility in our constituency."
MP David Willats
