Wellington balance centre - diagnostic testing

An experienced and professional multi-disciplinary team

The team consists of ENT consultants, audiologists, physiotherapists, nurses and allied healthcare professionals; all experienced in the assessment and treatment of vestibular and balance problems.

The centre is well supported by the Wellington Hospital outpatient services and is able to offer radiological investigations on initial consultant assessment should this be required.

Diagnostic facilities

Balance disorders and dizziness is a common problem affecting a lot of people in the community. The key to successful treatment is accurate diagnosis.

Imaging

The diagnostics and imaging department is one of the most up to date in the country and the largest of its kind in the UK private sector. They have just completed a £6 million investment programme both expanding and renewing many of the diagnostic facilities.

The centre is equipped with a full range of state of the art equipment including the fastest 64-slice CT scanner available, two MRI scanners, a full range of x-ray machines, ultrasound equipment and interventional radiology facilities.

They are constantly working to improve and expand their services and have recently invested in a film-less system so doctors can view scans and x-rays etc on- line. This will speed up the time from diagnosis to treatment and end delays caused by mislaid x-rays.

Wellington balance centre - posturography

Their team of 20 consultant radiologists, many of whom hold senior positions in some of London's renowned teaching hospitals, are on hand to interpret and report on the results of a patient's scan, x-ray or ultrasound. They are backed by highly qualified specialist radiographers and nurses and a back office team who prepare reports of each diagnostic investigation.

The department is available 24 hours for clinical emergencies and there is fast access to their In-Patient Service which is available between 8 am and 6 pm Mondays to Fridays.

Audiological and vestibular function testing

The unit offers a full range of diagnostic vestibular test procedures with easy-to-understand patient information provided prior to the appointment. Tests provided include:

  • Video-Nystagmography (VNG)
This includes gaze testing, smooth pursuit tracking and optokinetic testing. The VNG is a visual measurement of the movement of the eyes. This involves a light moving across a display screen in a darkened room and the patient will be required to follow the light with their eyes.
  • Air Caloric Testing
During this test a small probe is placed at the entrance of the ear. Through this probe, warm and cool air is introduced into the ear canal which stimulates a response from the balance system. Eye movements are then monitored to test this response and provide valuable diagnostic information.
  • Dynamic Posturography

The Wellington Hospital offer assessment of individual sensory and motor components of balance using the Smart  EquiTest Computerised Dynamic Posturography system. The information gained from testing clearly identifies any problems in the individual components of the balance system and this information is used to establish an individualised specifically targeted treatment program. The Smart EquiTest is also effective in the treatment of balance disorders.

A full range of audiological test procedures in a soundproof environment, either on-demand or by appointment are also offered.

Audiological assessments can be requested stand-alone or together with vestibular tests as part of a full audiological / vestibular investigation.

The Wellington Balance Centre works closely with the Rehabilitation Unit and the Pain Medicine Unit. For an appointment please contact The Wellington Balance Centre on 020 7483 5186.
