The need for health cash plans as you grow older
If you are fully retired or semi-retired in part time employment, your income may be less than before. Although NHS charges for some older groups are reduced, there are still some costs and extras
Sadly, as we get older, the number of times we need health care to repair the body, tends to increase.
Even if you are in full time work, you may be reluctant to pay for a full policy with covers such as pregnancy or for young children at home, which are no longer relevant.
Approaches to health cash plans for the over 50's and the elderly
It is worth checking:
Does your existing or potential private medical insurance cover include health cash automatically or as an option?
Is any voluntary scheme offered by former employer open to retired employees?
Does your union or professional body offer a scheme?
Historically, most health cash providers would not accept new enquiries from anyone 60 or older. This is still the case for quite a lot of them. Others have increased their acceptance age to 69.
Some companies provide lower benefits if the individual is over 59 or over 64
A small number of companies have developed cover for older age groups. They vary as to whether the age is over 50, over 55, over 60, or over 64.
Some have no upper age limit, so even a 99 year old could join.
