Why you may need a funeral plan

Funerals can be expensive, costing several thousand pounds, and many people worry that when they die, they won't leave enough money for their funeral. With a funeral plan, you arrange and pay for it in advance. You can arrange a funeral plan for your own funeral or for someone else.

Most will only cover funerals in the UK, but there are now special covers for UK expatriates who live abroad and want funerals there or back in the UK.

Death is inevitable and often sudden. Many people choose to avoid the issue, making no preparations for their funeral other than making a Last Will and Testament which details how your assets should be divided after your death, and perhaps leaving some money aside as a contribution to funeral costs.

If you have a particular funeral in mind, or wish to protect your loved ones from unnecessary stress and organisation, you may want to buy a funeral plan.

The cost of funerals and all the trimmings has increased in recent years, and the amount left to relatives to pay for the funeral is often inadequate. The cost rises on average 10% each year, so it is worth looking at a pre-paid funeral plan.

Only 11 per cent of Britons currently have a funeral insurance policy.
