Funeral costs vary a great deal from one funeral director to another. Funeral payments are normally recoverable from the dead person's estate. The cheapest service is not necessarily the best value.
A 2010 report by the National Association of Funeral Directors found the average price of a standard grave has risen 42 per cent in the past three years, with an average increase of 48 per cent and 67 per cent for cremation and interring respectively. Since 2003 there has been a cap on social fund grants, which with funeral costs rising far more quickly than inflation, has resulted in a £500 shortfall.
The average cost of a funeral is around £2800, and by 2015 the cost is expected to exceed £4000. Cost varies by region, with London ones now approaching £3000.
