How to reduce the cost of international health insurance

Get several quotes

When you are looking for your expatriate international health insurance you should obtain at least three quotes from different providers and compare what you are getting for what you will pay.

Only buy cover you need

This sounds obvious, but many policies will cover areas that may not be relevant to you. Several are designed on a ‘me-too’ basis that includes everything that main competitors offer.

Many providers add a whole heap of extras on your policy that may seem to be transparent and even perhaps free, but your premium includes paying for these extras. One of the most commonly added extras is cover for chronic disease and related conditions. If you fall into a low risk category for any of the chronic diseases you could consider cutting this cover from your policy.

Choose the cover you need

Investigate what packages are on offer. Also, look at products where you can choose which sections you want to include. Packages can be good value, while choice of cover products will vary greatly between insurers and depend on what you choose.

Buy limited cover

There are policies where you only cover major illnesses, which may be of interest to those looking for low cost health insurance. Limited cover plans tend to be cheaper - but remember that most medical treatment is on minor ailments and injuries.

Choose a higher excess

You can often reduce the premium by increasing the excess. It does mean you may pay more if you have a few minor ailments, but it will also mean that should anything major happen that you will be covered.
