What's better? Private or NHS healthcare?
Dental insurance : Types of plan
These are the main types of dental care insurance available in the UK:
Dental maintenance plans
Where you pay a monthly or annual fee for dental treatment. Some, but not all, include dental insurance. Confusingly, some insurers and dentists insist on calling these capitation plans.
Dental care insurance plans
The simple basis of dental insurance is that policies cover the costs of going to the dentist. Most policies cover emergency and routine treatment. Some cover NHS treatment, some private, some both.
Dental care insurance plans for children
Children are often automatically covered by a family dental care insurance or dental maintenance plan. Sometimes, you can add children to individual or family dental care insurance or dental maintenance plans. Some dental maintenance plan providers offer special cover for children, which parents can purchase. Some independent schools offer dental care insurance plans to pupils.
Dental implant cover
Dental implants are replacing dentures. They help people regain their smile. Dental implant insurance covers the cost of repairing or replacing your dental implant.
Tooth whitening cover
Cosmetic dentistry is one of dentistry's fastest growing areas. Tooth whitening is extremely popular. This type of insurance has recently appeared in Europe. As yet, no UK insurer offers cover.
Dental cover for businesses and their employees
Businesses can buy dental care insurance, specialist cover or maintenance plans for directors and employees. There are very few dental care insurance plans or maintenance plans for small businesses. Self-employed individuals can purchase individual insurances, but as yet there are no specialist business plans for them. Several dental plan providers only offer what they call corporate cover. This tends to be for larger companies, which is outside our scope. Cover can be company paid, part company paid, or voluntary basis paid for by employers.
