Hypothermia in New Born Babies and Infants

Definition
New born babies have very little body fat for insulation and cannot yet shiver so they are more vulnerable to the effects of cold.

Action Plan
Do not wash the baby, dry it with a clean towel and then wrap it in a blanket or dry towel, except it’s face. Place a baby cap or a clean sock on its head, as this is where it looses most of its heat. Lay the baby on the mother’s chest, as the mothers heat will help to warm the baby, ensuring that the mother is also kept warm.
