The London Clinic strikes gold in 2022 with a number of awards

The London Clinic is proud to have rounded out 2022 with a number of awards, across cancer care, patient experience, nursing and digital excellence.

Innovation in cancer care

As a growing centre of excellence in cancer care, The London Clinic has this year been recognised in a number of areas.

The London Clinic’s Radiotherapy team won two awards following the introduction of a new “tattooless treatment”, which was developed to provide an impermanent alternative to the small but permanent alignment tattoos traditionally used during radiotherapy.

In April, the Radiotherapy team won the CHKS “Top Hospitals” award for innovation, while in November the team struck gold again for “Innovation in Care” at the prestigious LaingBuisson Awards.

“This innovative treatment is a clear demonstration of our hospital values – we work as one, we go further and we personalise care,” said Tonya Kloppers, Director of Nursing, Quality and Clinical Governance at The London Clinic.

“The project was led by a committed team of allied health professionals going further to put patient choice first. We’re tremendously proud of our Radiotherapy team for their achievements.”

Excellence in cancer environments

Meanwhile, in March this year, The London Clinic’s dedicated cancer centre, The Duchess of Devonshire Wing, was for the second time awarded five stars and a rating of “excellent” by cancer charity Macmillan.

The Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM) assesses whether cancer services and environments meet the standards required by people living with cancer.

Macmillan’s MQEM assessor said: “The team [at The London Clinic] should be very proud of achieving [a score of] five in all standards, particularly in view of the exceedingly challenging issues the pandemic has presented.

“It is impressive [to be] receiving such praise from users of the ‘spotless and immaculate environment’, and rarely do assessments see that careful planning and thought has also been given to the staff facilities.

“I would like to convey my appreciation to all of the staff… in such a progressive and important centre.”

Exceptional nursing

As home to a care team comprised of over 1,000 nursing, clinical and support staff, personalised patient care is central to The London Clinic.

In 2022, we were also recognised for our innovative approaches to nursing and patient experience.

The London Clinic was selected as a finalist in the “Managing Long-term Conditions” category at the Nursing Times Awards for our Continuous Subcutaneous Hydrocortisone Infusion (CSHI) service.

Set up by Consultant Nurse in Endocrinology Phillip Yeoh, his nursing team and our endocrinologists – and supported by our pharmacists and leadership teams – the service allows us to treat patients with Addison's disease, a rare condition in which the adrenal glands above the kidneys stop working, resulting in a lack of cortisol and androgens.

Meanwhile, our new “spin art” therapy programme received runner-up for the Fiona Littledale Award at the Patient Experience Network National Awards (PENNA), in recognition of best practice in patient experience.

Created after an encounter by two colleagues from very different teams, Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist Anita Kolandaisamy and Site Supervisor Dominic Mason, “spin art” allows vulnerable patients to access art therapy, thereby providing a personalised emotional escape from treatment anxieties.

Best-in-class digital experience

Having launched a new, patient-centric brand and website this year, The London Clinic is proud to be the recipient of two awards for its digital offering.

In October, our new website won in the category of “Regional Excellence” across Europe, the Middle East and Africa at the Acquia Engage Awards, reflecting the “marketing vision and technical execution that combine to fuel world-class customer experiences”.

The website was also awarded silver for “Best User Experience” in the BIMA Awards, the UK’s longest-standing and most prestigious digital and technology awards, for “empowering patients to take control of their own healthcare”.

The awards are representative of The London Clinic’s continued commitment to patient experience and innovation in the digital space.

The London Clinic is hugely proud of our diverse community for the recognition they have received in the name of patient care, and we look forward to building on these achievements in the year ahead.
