Cosmetic surgery and treatments available in Mauritius
The Department of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery at Apollo Bramwell Hospital, Mauritius specialises in the following procedures:
Rhinoplasty is a common procedure whose aim is to improve the shape of the nose. Hump, broad nose and flat nose can be corrected.
Breast enlargement in male adolescent can be a source of social embarrassment and can be treated by removing the excess breast and fat tissue. It leaves no visible scars.
Also called blepharoplasty, this procedure treats droopy eyelids, loose skin and fat bags beneath the skin. In addition, fat can be injected to correct hollows underneath the lower lids for a fresher and more rejuvenated look. This procedure is done under local anaesthesia and does not require hospitalization. Recovery takes a week and scars are not noticeable.
Loose skin of the neck, with loss of youthful contour (‘turkey wattle’), can be corrected by adjusting muscle position in the neck, liposuction and removal of excess skin.
Face lift makes use of various techniques to create a smoother and more youthful face. Through incisions around the ear, a surgeon removes excess skin and manipulates deeper layers of tissue to tighten the face. Fat injection is used at the same time to restore volume to the face.
This procedure removes acne scars over the face. Two or three sessions may be required. To prevent or predict problems with pigmentation after surgery, a test patch is one behind the ear prior to the operation.
Keeping the triceps muscle toned is a challenge as we age, especially for women. Extra skin and fat may dangle from the upper arms. This can be corrected by a brachioplasty which tightens the under portion of the arm between the elbow and the armpit. This procedure will leave a permanent scar on the inner side of the arm.
Liposuction is the most
common cosmetic surgery. Using a suction device, bulges of fat from the tummy, thighs, hips and the
buttocks are removed. The result is a smoother contour to the treated area.
Liposuction works best on patients of average
or slightly average weight. Risks are minimal, though infection and temporary
skin discolouration can happen.
Unlike liposuction, a tummy
tuck is a major surgery. Also called Abdominoplasty, the surgery gets rid of
excess fat and tightens muscles in
the abdominal wall. It leaves a permanent scar. This operation is not
recommended for overweight patients or for those planning a future pregnancy.
Breast augmentation is a
common procedure. Enlargement is done with silicone gel or saline-filled
implants via an incision in the lower breast fold, areola or armpit. The
procedure is minimally invasive and has relatively few risks.
Heavy breasts can cause
neck and back pain, in addition to being a source of social embarrassment. Skin
and breast tissue are surgically
removed to create the desired breast size. Risks include change in sensation
over the nipple and difficulty in breast
feeding.
Breast reconstruction after
removal of the breast due to cancer can be done by using the tissues of the
lower stomach skin and fat or the skin and muscle of the back to create a
breast mound. Continued cancer surveillance is done by the oncologist.
Cleft lip is a birth
defect. A cleft lip may be just a small notch in the lip. It may also be a
complete split in the lip that goes all the way to
the base of the nose. A cleft palate can be on one or both sides of the roof of
the mouth. It may go the full length of the palate. Children may have one or
both of these conditions at birth.
Cleft lip and cleft palate
repair is a surgical procedure to fix the upper lip and palate (roof of the
mouth). The lip repair is done at three months of
age provided the child is well nourished and healthy. The palate is repaired at
around 10 to 11 months to give the
best chances for good speech to develop. At birth, parents are reassured of the
future of their babies and emphasis is placed on the importance of feeding and
bonding with the infant. As well, they are advised on the need for regular paediatrician follow-ups.
Sometimes minor or major
scars and other deformities persist in the lip and the nose after primary cleft
lip surgery early in life. In a
cosmetically-conscious culture, these can be very disturbing to the patient. A
revision procedure can minimize the scars or
deformities.
- Botox injection
- Fillers and fat injection
- Scar revision
- Removal of lumps and
cysts
- Burn and post-burn
deformities
- Correction of prominent
ears
- Hand injuries – tendon
vessel and nerve injury can be treated with micro vascular surgery
- Carpal tunnel release for
carpal tunnel syndrome
