The Republic of Latvia emerged from Soviet Union in 1991 and became a member state of NATO and the European Union in 2004. Situated in northern Europe on the Baltic Sea, its capital Riga is the largest city of the Baltic states, one of the largest cities in Northern Europe and home to more than one third of Latvia's population.
Though Latvia is a small country, it has an outstanding reputation for its achievements in medicine. Latvian doctors are trained to international standards and are renowned for their qualification and professionalism. Many Latvian doctors have benefited from professional exchange programmes in other European countries and the USA.
After joining the EU Latvia experienced one of the highest economic growths in Europe, and developed healthcare services of the highest standards.
