Crigler-Najjar syndrome is a rare genetic defect of the liver in babies in which the levels of bilirubin increase in the blood to the extent that it becomes toxic. The skin and the white of the eye become yellow. It can even cause death in babies due to brain damage . Medication is used to manage the disease but often a liver replacement may be required to achieve a good outcome.
