The report which is free to download provides a snapshot of web activity in the private healthcare sector and an insight into the health issues about which web users are concerned. The report includes information about gender and age of visitors to health and medical sites, search engine use, the most visited health information sites, the health and medical sector’s share of all web activity and the most visited private hospital and health insurance company sites.

Report highlights

  • Women make up the majority (fifty five per cent) of people who use the internet to research health and medical issues. Women over the age of 45 making up more than a third (37%) of web users looking for health and medical information on the web

  • Nine of the top twenty health and medical searches on the internet relate to obesity, weight loss and healthy living.

  • NHS Choices was the most visited site in the health and medical sector in the UK, followed by Boots.

  • Spire Healthcare (previously BUPA Hospitals) was the market leader in the private hospital sector in terms of share of web activity.

  • BUPA was the leading health insurance company web site.

  • The Harley Medical Group was the leading cosmetic surgery company web site.

  • Google accounted for 90% of UK searches related to health and medical sites.

  • The specific phrases - “bmi calculator”, “calorie counter” and “diabetes” - were the most common disease/condition related terms typed into a search engine, resulting in traffic to websites within the Health and Medical sector.

  • Private Healthcare UK holds a strong position in the healthcare web sector, and continues to grow its market share in the health and medical market.

 

The latest report shows that people are increasingly reliant on the web as a resource for a wide range of information about health and medical services.  Private Healthcare UK continues to grow in popularity, and in helping people to make the right choice of healthcare provider.  The site provides healthcare consumers with reliable and easy to use information about private healthcare options and enables them to make informed decisions about treatment, healthcare providers and insurance.
